Role of Methane in global warming and global steps to reduce methane's emission

Global warming mean increment in the temperature of earth's atmosphere due to green house gases and pollutants like CO,Methane,CFC etc. global warming is a burning issue for the mankind. in this article we will know about the role of methane in global warming

what is methane - Methane is a colourless, odourless gas chemically known as CH4, it is formed naturally from the degradation of organic wastes and is also produced by humans.

concern about methane -

  • Methane is currently 260% higher than  the pre-industrial era.
  • Man-made methane is responsible for 45% of global warming.
  • Methane can cause 80% more global warming than carbon -di-oxide
  • Methane emissions see biggest increase in 2021

Global steps to reduce methane's emission

    • GMP(global methane pledge): GMP was announced in 2021 at COP26. Its goal is to reduce global methane emissions by 2030 by at least 30 percent below 2020 levels.

    • Methane Alert and Response System (MARS): It was presented at COP27 to track methane emissions. With its help, the source of methane can be traced.
    • MethaneSat: MethaneSat is a state-of-the-art satellite. It is designed to accurately trace global methane emissions.

Major sources of methane - (per year)

    1. wetlands - (161.6 million tons)
    2. Fossil fuels - (129.5 million tones)
    3. livestock - (103 million tons)
    4. Paddy farming(34.2 million tons)
