5 Major Astronomical Observatories in India

Astronomical observatories are structures containing telescopes and auxiliary instruments

with which to observe celestial objects. Telescopes provide a means of collecting and

analyzing radiation from celestial objects, even those in the far reaches of the universe.

5 major Astronomical Observatories in india are -

  1. Indian Astronomical Observatory HANLE

  • Located at 15000 feet in Leh - Ladakh

2. Vainu Bappu Obsevatory, Kavalur, Tamilnadu

  • Operated by Indian Institute of Astrophysics, it had the largest telescope in Asia namely Vainu Bappu Telescope

3.   Kodaikanal Solar Observatory

  • Located at the southern tip of the Palni Hills in Tamilnadu,it is among the only two observatories in the world which has over 100 years of data on the Sun and its influence on the Earth ans surrounding space.

4.   Udaipur Solar Observatory

  • In the middle of Fathesagar lake , this observatory is strategically placed to reduce the amount of heat from the surface layer which result in batter image quality.

5.  ARIES Observatory Nainital

  • It is Asia's largest and first of it.s ind optical telescope at Devasthal near Nainital aimed to help in further research of star structures, high energy radiation, exoplanets and properties of star clusters.
